How to Prepare to Start a New Dog Training Course

Starting a new training regiment or class for your four legged friend? This article will help you prepare yourself and your canine friend before getting started.

Steps

  1. Use a canine training manual. These are priceless when training new dogs and will prevent you from getting accustomed to bad training habits like negative reinforcement.

  2. Understand that your dog is not a human. He or she will not always understand what you mean. Do not get frustrated with your dog because then your dog will become much less motivated to partake in training.

  3. Spend quality time with your four legged friend. Know that Rome was not built in a day and that it is all about taking small steps and building on each positive result. Study your dog's obedience manual.

  4. Introduce practicing into your dog's schedule with you. For example, you can practice the "sit" command while making your morning coffee.

  5. Reward your dog when he makes a step in the right direction. Dogs learn best with positive reinforcement.

Tips

  • Buy dog treats to aid with your dog's training.

  • Always use a cheerful, upbeat voice when training your dog. Never use a harsh tone.

Warnings

  • Don't get frustrated if Fido doesn't get it right the first time.
